No woman has ever won an Oscar for directing. Could this be the year that all changes?

…Link PhilipD 1 Feb 2010, 12:15PM A deeply confused article, indicated by the interchanging of ‘film maker’ and ‘director’. Director is just one role in film making, which depends on importance depending entirely on a range of circumstance. There are of course pure director auteurs but they are very rare. In modern Hollywood, the producer invariably has more power over the final form of the film than the director. There is no point to saying why there are too few female directors without also looking at gender balances in cinematography, script writing, producing, etc., etc. And in fact there are (and always have been) many women deeply involved on the production and screenwriting side, while cinematography is almost exclusively a male area.
Kurosawa compared directing to being a general in charge of an army. Its no coincidence therefore that talented women in film have tended to go for less high profile (but still highly influential roles) such as production. As just one obvious example, Kathleen…
